FI.FA.TA. - Madagascar
Association for Farmers’ Progress (Fikambanana Fampivoarana ny Tantsaha)
About the Organisation
FIFATA, the Association for Farmers’ Progress, was created in 1989 in Antsirabe. At first regional, it has become a national organisation that federates national and regional organisa-tions throughout Madagascar serving the same goal and having diverse activities.
Its members are mutual insurance systems, agricultural credit organisations (the CECAM branch network), regional agricultural co-operative unions, regional farmers' organisation fed-erations, and agricultural training organisations. In all, FIFATA represents 70,000 farming households directly or more than 400,000 people indirectly.
FIFATA’s principal goal is to represent Madagascar’s farmers and make their voices heard by the national authorities in charge of agricultural issues. FIFATA thus aims to contribute to defining a policy that favours the emergence of modernised family farming open to markets and able to generate sellable surplus. It provides technical and methodology support directly to regional farmers' organisation federations: land tenure security support, and training support for regional communication, representation and consultation activities.
FIFATA published and distributes an agricultural newspaper, Ireo Tantsaha Vaovao (here are the new farmers), and develops partnerships with rural radio stations.
FIFATA is a member of IFAP, and participates actively in international negotiations on Afri-can and global orientations for agriculture.
